    Overview of Canada’s Federal Elections

    The 44th Canadian federal election (formally the 44th Canadian general election) is scheduled to take place on or before October 21, 2023.  Provinces elect representatives to serve in the House of Commons in this election.  These representatives are called Members of Parliament or MPs.

    Who Can Vote

    You can vote in a federal election if you are:

    • 18 years of age or older, and
    • a Canadian citizen, and
    • a resident in the province and ward in which you’d like to vote

    If you’re eligible to vote, ensure that you are on the voter’s list.

    Who Can Run

    You can run as a Candidate in a federal election if you are:

    • 18 years of age or older, and
    • a Canadian citizen, and
    • You must file a Nomination Paper (EC 20010) with the returning officer for the electoral district (riding) where you intend to run, along with all other documents required by the nomination process.

    How to Vote

    Electors can vote in the ward in which they reside.  Voting can be done at assigned polling stations and City Halls.  Voters must present valid ID to prove identity and residency to vote.

    Check your local election authority website for polling station addresses, hours and acceptable forms of identification.
