    Overview of Northwest Territories’ Provincial Elections

    Northwest Territory elections are held on the first Monday in October every four years, starting with 2007.  Representatives for the Territorial Legislature are elected in this election.

    Who Can Vote

    You can vote in a Northwest Territory election if you are:

    • be a Canadian citizen
    • be 18 years old on or before polling day
    • have been a resident of the NWT for at least 12 months prior to polling day

    You must be accurately registered with Elections NWT before you can cast a ballot. If you have recently turned 18 years of age, moved to the territory or moved within the territory and are eligible to vote, you are strongly encouraged to register.

     

    Who Can Run

    You can run as a Candidate in a Northwest Territory election if you are:

    An individual is eligible to be a candidate if they are:

    • a Canadian citizen
    • 18 years of age
    • a resident of the NWT for the past 12 consecutive months

    An individual is NOT eligible to be a candidate if they are:

    • imprisoned in a correctional institution
    • convicted of a Major Election Offence in the previous five years
    • a sitting member of the Parliament of Canada or of a territorial or provincial legislative assembly
    • The Chief Electoral Officer

    How to Vote

    Electors can vote in the ward or jurisdiction in which they reside.  Voting can be done at assigned polling stations and City Halls.  Voters must present valid ID to prove identity and residency to vote.

    Check your local election authority website for polling station addresses, hours and acceptable forms of identification.
